Description

Apollo defines the notion of Greek beauty - the 'kouros', or noble, nude, beardless young man - and is revered as one of the most important, and also most complex, of the Greek gods. He was another of Zeus' sons (the mother on this occasion being the Titan Leto) and the twin sister of the huntress god, Artemis. Artemis and Apollo are often depicted together; indeed, many thought his bow skills learned from his more-accomplished sister. The Temple of Apollo at Delphi is considered one of the earliest dedications to the god, adorned with motifs and epithets (such as "know thyself" that reference the Delphic Oracle and Apollo himself). Amusingly, unlike his father, Apollo was constantly failing in love, with one of his pursuits even choosing to become a tree rather than be with him.
