Description
A hippodrome is a sports arena used for horse and chariot racing, with the name coming from the words 'hippos' meaning horse, and 'dromos' or course. This circus had a wide track for ten chariots to race at one time, making for exciting and dangerous races. In the hopes of even more drama the Greeks placed an altar to Taraxippus, the horse disturber, at each corner. This spirit supposedly frightened the horses at the most dangerous part of the track, causing crashes! Some hippodromes were also used for footraces. The Lykaion hippodrome shows evidence that athletes took part in races during the same festivals as the chariots. Pentathlons, boxing, wrestling and other contests also took place there.
