Description

Economic and military dominance relied not only land victories but also on control of the sea. An empire had to be able to outfit merchant vessels and warships, as well as keep contact with colonies and trading partners, if it was to thrive and grow. Warships, from patrolling biremes to colossal quinqueremes were vital in maintaining trade networks and for moving and resupplying overseas expeditionary armies. In Carthage, following the Phoenician tradition, the docksheds of the fleet were improved by the construction of a great 'cothon'. A protected harbour, the cothon was built to house and outfit 220 warships. It resembled a great wheel, with the slips facing inwards towards a central island housing the commander and administrative headquarters of the fleet; a fine example of elegant and functional design.
