Description
Although described by Caesar as, “the largest and most warlike nation of all the Germans”, the Suebi, or “our people”, are in fact not a single tribe, but an alliance of many smaller groups sharing gods and a common language. Warlike in outlook, with a long history of raiding and feuding with their Gallic neighbours across the Rhine, political power amongst the Suebi tribes is held by their elected kings and chieftains. With power coming directly from success in war, being seen as both warrior and leader inspires their distinctive “Suebian knot” hairstyle; outlandish designs enabling their brave leaders to be seen amid the throng.
By 58BC, at the invitation of the Arverni and Sequani in return for support in their long feud with the Aedui, the Suebian king, Ariovistus, has already begun to settle his people across the Rhine. Unopposed by the Roman Senate, he has even been recognised as a “King and Friend of the Roman People”, in a clear attempt to placate him.
However, if the crushing defeat of the Aedui at Magetobriga in 63BC revealed anything, it is that Rome is either unable or unwilling to defend both their Aedui clients and other Gallic allies as well. Equally telling, is that the Arverni and Sequani lack the strength to deal a fatal blow to the Aedui without assistance. This means that the Suebi are in a very strong position at the beginning of their campaign, their actions will shape the conflict to come. The result is surely a foregone conclusion: the acquisition of the land and resources in Gaul that the Suebi people need.
