Description

Although Roman writers often refused to acknowledge the skills possessed by the barbarians, there was one area of warfare which they freely admitted the Celts excelled at: horsemanship. The Greek historian Strabo stated that the finest cavalrymen in the whole Roman army were Celts; they were incredibly versatile troops, able to ride to any area they were needed and dismount to fight on foot. This was made easier by the cleverly-designed bridles worn by their horses, which had a small peg for staking into the ground to keep the horse in place while its rider fought.
