Description

Phrygia lay in middle of Asia Minor and in Greek myth-history was a land of legendary kings. King Midas - he of the golden touch - was a mythical king of Phrygia, as was his father, Gordias, who created the Gordian Knot - a famous anecdote for lateral thinking. Phrygia was conquered by the expanding Achaemenid Persian Empire in approximately 540BC, and their lands were incorporated as the Lydian Kingdom fell. The Phrygians were renowned for their infantry, with light javelinmen and spears being the mainstay of their forces. They were notably present in 355BC, during the passionate but ultimately unsuccessful revolt by Artabazos II against his Persian overlords.
