Description
Hephaestus was the Olympian god of blacksmiths and other artisanal professions, and one of Zeus' many, many sons, this time born of his union with Hera. The god was known by many names; 'coppersmith' and 'renowned artificer', as well as the moniker 'Aetnaean' for his supposed workshop below the Aetna volcano. One mythological tale saw Hera cast Hephaestus from Olympus because he was lame, whilst others state he was made lame by his fall from the mountain. Either way, Hephaestus was also known as "the lame one", despite his prodigious smithing skills. The Temple of Hephaestus in Athenai is one of the most well-preserved temples of antiquity still standing.
