Description
The mythical tale of Jason and the Argonauts sees the eponymous Jason sent out on a quest by King Pelias to Colchis, where he was to retrieve the Golden Fleece. It was said to be made from the fleece of a golden-haired, winged ram. Obtaining it would place Jason on the throne of Iolcus. The quest was fraught with danger, culminating in an epic final confrontation between Jason and its defenders, including fire-breathing bulls and an eternal dragon whose teeth became soldiers. Though dramatic and epic, the story of the Golden Fleece represents simple concepts; kingship, prosperity and wealth. To Colchians, it symbolised their ability to overcome and flourish without help from their Greek homeland.
