Description
Nearly two millennia after it was built the Pantheon in Rome is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world! An incredible feat of architecture, the dome and its large opening (or oculus) at the top represent the heavens. This stunning temple, originally built by Marcus Agrippa and rebuilt after fire by Hadrian, allowed the Roman people to come and pay homage to all of the immortals at once. Romans believed in many different gods and goddesses, and this was a temple to all the gods of Rome, where they could all be honoured properly. Many of the Roman gods came from the early Italian tribes, and some adopted very different heavenly duties: Mars was god of spring originally, but became the god of war.
